"What is Music?" Flash Seminar

What is music? Is it any (beautiful) sound? Is it organized and intentional? Does it have to be made by humans? Can silence be music? In this Flash Seminar, faculty from the McIntire Department of Music will lead a discussion on how music can be varyingly made, experienced and interpreted, from the great composers of the past to contemporary global pop, from sonic glitches to the sounds of a glacier melting. We will share ideas and work that push the boundaries of what we might ordinarily think of as constituting music. What should — or possibly should not — be included in this term? In answering these questions, we will listen, talk and play. Please join us for a lively and musical event!
